At Austral Idiomas, we believe that a Spanish program isn’t complete without a full array of socio-cultural activities. These activities don’t just allow students to practice their Spanish, but also increase their exposure to Argentinean culture, allowing them to better understand the particularities of the local Spanish language, all while making new friends and having fun.

With this in mind, we strive to creatively organize activities and excursions to occupy our students’ free time, complementing our teaching. All events are voluntary, guided in Spanish by the school’s own staff, and may require participation costs, such as: transportation, entrance tickets, meals, etc.

Among the options we organize in accordance with students’ preferences, some highlights are:

Tango (Classes / Show / Carlos Gardel’s House)

No tourist could leave without hearing the sounds of tango echoing or see a couple bailando on the streets of Buenos Aires. And since our students are much more than tourists, they can’t leave without learning the eight basic steps, attending a show in the famous Café Tortoni or visiting the home of Carlos Gardel, the King of the Tango. Classes are for all levels and given by expert professors. The first steps are simple and can be learned in just a few hours.

Soccer/Football

Argentina is a near paradise for sports enthusiasts. Among the sports where Argentineans stand out: polo (World Champions), rugby (among the top 5 worldwide), women’s ice hockey (World Champions), tennis and auto racing. However, the most popular sport in this country, and also the one that awakes the greatest passion, is soccer. Every month we organize outings to the River Plate or Boca Juniors stadiums, the homes of the two most important teams and arch rivals, so that students can experience this passion and feel in the flesh the emotion of yelling goooooool!

Comida Criolla (Typical Argentinean Food)

In spite of the international fame of Argentina’s meat, and as a surprise to many visitors, this country’s gastronomy goes much further than barbecue, or “assado” as it’s known here. Every month we organize a lunch or dinner full of criolla cooking delicacies, typical Argentinean food. Without a doubt, empanadas are the choice for appetizers – flaky pastries that may be filled with cheese, beef, chicken, ham and cheese, etc. Another typical dish is matambre, a type of beef roll filled with peppers, eggs and vegetables, served hot or cold. Regional cooking is also made up of varieties such as locro (braised corn and pork) and carbonada (beef stew with vegetables and rice). And for dessert, or if you prefer, as the “gran finale”, ice cream (helado) is the favorite. Most ice cream shops follow Italian-style artisan methods, giving it a distinct flavor.

Weekend Excursions

Every two weeks we organize a full day or weekend excursion. Normally we travel to neighboring cities, but sometimes, we look a little further and get to Mendoza, Mar del Plata or even Colonia del Sacranento, in Uruguay. The program depends on holidays and other opportunities. These excursions, as with the activities, are voluntary, guided in Spanish by the school’s own staff, and may require participation costs, such as: transportation, lodging, entry tickets, meals, etc.

General Information

Activities never take place during class hours. All events are voluntary and are always accompanied and guided in Spanish by one or two school staff (teachers, coordinators). All activities require participation costs, such as: transportation, entry tickets, meals, etc. The average amount spent on activities varies between $ 15 and $ 60 (USD 5 - USD 20, approx).
